| The
trip journal was written longhand with a silver pen on the black pages of a notebook given
to me by S. W. This notebook was full by the end of the outbound leg, and the return
journey was documented in a white-page notebook I bought in Santa Rosa. Over the
course of the trip, the notes were transcribed and converted into web pages. They
were lightly copy edited. Information that was added after the initial handwritten
notes were inserted in the right hand margin. The photos were taken with a Casio QV-10 digital camera. It has a resolution of 320x240 pixels, and unfortunately doesn't cope particularly well with high light intensity and contrast: that is, most outdoor shots. The images were downloaded from the camera, processed for color balance in Adobe PhotoShop and converted to JPEGs. The web journal was built using FrontPage version 3.0. In creating it I attempted to make it accessible to people with slow dial-up connections, and not necessarily the latest browser. Thumbnails are used extensively. I decided not to use frames, even though they would have made the design of the Day pages considerably more elegant, since frame-based pages are not accessible to all users. |
