Went back to South Slough (pronounced "slew") to look around again. Had a wonderful conversation with Tom Gaskill about their activities. It's a research station, not a park (have to be very clear about that ; - ) and seems to be rather well funded. | tgaskill@harborside.com South Slough is a joint NOAA and Oregon effort. It's mission is to promote research and education about estuaries on the outer coast of Washington, Oregon and northern California |

We walked down to the Slough again - frost on the ground in the little canyons. | On my way
out I bought a couple of little perspex magnifying boxes and saw the most wonderful piece
of information design: the 1997 Tide Calendar for the Oregon Coast, produced by Tidelines.
The ebb and flow of the tides are shown as an oscillating curve over a calendar -

| Back at the RV park early in the afternoon. Did a mail sync, and had a long conversation with Ruth Barker. She and her husband Gary own the park (for the last few years, started after their kids had finished high school) and are in the final throes of getting approvals for extending the site along the beach. Wonderful people, and a great setting. | Interesting how often really nice people turn out to be Christians; the Barkers had a "Jesus is the reasons for the season" motto on their street signage. | ||
| A new RV pulled in this morning; sign on the back window read "Fur and Feathers; Taxidermy Art." So it's true: people can take their jobs on the road with them. | |||

We had our Solstice Dinner this evening.
(Should've been last night, but we were both too grumpy and difficult.) We lit all the
candles S. had been buying on the trip so far in preparation for this, and made up, taking
turns, a story of why the sun came back. The main dish was a Festive Focaccia (toppings: sliced olives and tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and grated Parmesan - explicating the symbology is left as an exercise for the reader) and a big round Bread & Butter Pudding |
Essentially, Rain persuaded Sun that the people really needed it to come back. Sun noticed the candles and bonfires some people had been lighting, and came back - reluctantly at first. | |
